The aim of the course is to familiarize students with literary studies: its terminology, goals, development and methodology, with special emphasis on contemporary trends in research on the literary text. The lectures focus mainly on contemporary, mainly 20th century, theories of literature and approaches to literature, their historical and ideological contexts and the relations between literary studies and other areas of reflection in the humanities (e.g., philosophy, aesthetics, linguistics, anthropology, psychology and semiotics). The classes aim at deepening students’ knowledge of selected terminology used in literary theory through the analysis of source texts and application of these texts and theoretical tools to interpretations of literary works.
