COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The aim of the course is to identify a distinct tradition (distinct, in the first place, from British tradition) manifested by a variety of cultural productions in Ireland over the last hundred years. Ireland’s unique position on the outskirts of Europe and the complex trajectory of its history make it a particularly interesting cultural laboratory for exploring the links between artistic expressions and the lived realities they reflect upon. The course focuses on Irish literary works, films and other manifestations of culture in English to emphasize, on the one hand, their universal appeal and, on the other, their special value as complex representations of insular experience. The stress is also put on the responses to the current geopolitical situation to do with Brexit and its aftermath in Ireland (including both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland).
