Through historical texts, literature, media, and contemporary case studies, students will analyze the American Dream, social mobility, and national identity while critically engaging with works like The Great Gatsby, The Pursuit of Happyness, and The Simpsons. The course delves into the U.S. government, democracy, and justice system, highlighting key principles through discussions on the Constitution, civil rights movements, and media portrayals, including Selma and Law & Order. Economic systems, education, healthcare, and environmental policy will be examined alongside the role of immigration, religion, and family structures in shaping American culture. Interactive activities such as mock trials, policy debates, media analysis, and storytelling exercises will enhance critical thinking and communication skills. The course culminates in a final project where students apply their insights to authentic science communication, bridging academic knowledge with real-world impact.
