Feminist criticism in context

The course focuses on feminist criticism, in relation, however, to other literary theories as well as the historical and cultural factors.

Practically then, our reading of selected woman-centred texts will be framed with the historical, cultural and sociological issues. Additionally, students will discuss the texts also to notice the stylistic devices and the basic formulas of the discourse.

To make the scene relatively varied, the texts under scrutiny will include both fiction and non-fiction, male and female voices, traditional and revolutionary stance (possibly to question the validity of the very distinctions).

The proposed themes are: language of the first-wave, second-wave, cultural and Lacanian feminists; myths of the male body; philological readings of the biblical figures and their stories (e.g. Eve, Ruth and “the unnamed woman” of the gospels).
