Rebecca Johnson discusses Embrace the Base at Greenham Common
Rebecca Johnson talks about the ‘Embrace the Base’ protest at Greenham Common where a group of women held hands around the nuclear base in a peaceful protest against the continuing presence of nuclear weapons on British soil.
Feminists contributed a great amount to the UK peace movement from the 1950s onwards. For the most part the ideals of non-violent protest were widely adopted, with agreement that property but not people could be sacrificed as part of the political struggle. Militant elements of the movement and those involved in civil conflict in Northern Ireland, however, challenged this belief on occasion.
