Trójkąt prostokątny to trójkąt, którego jeden z kątów wewnętrznych jest prosty. Dwa boki trójkąta wyznaczające ramiona kąta prostego nazywane są przyprostokątnymi, trzeci bok przeciwprostokątną.
Funkcje trygonometryczne dla miar kątów ostrych można zdefiniować jako stosunki długości odpowiednich dwóch boków trójkąta prostokątnego (Rys 1).
- sinus – oznaczany \(\sin\;\) – stosunek długości przyprostokątnej \(a\;\) leżącej naprzeciw kąta \(\alpha\;\) i długości przeciwprostokątnej \(c\;\);
- cosinus – oznaczany \(\cos\;\) – stosunek długości przyprostokątnej przyległej \(b\;\) do kąta \(\alpha\;\) i przeciwprostokątnej \(c\;\);
- tangens – oznaczany \(\operatorname{tg}\;\) – stosunek długości przyprostokątnej \(a\;\) leżącej naprzeciw kąta \(\alpha\;\) i długości przyprostokątnej \(b\;\) przyległej do tego kąta;
- cotangens (kotangens) – \(\operatorname{ctg}\;\) – stosunek długości przyprostokątnej \(b\;\) przyległej do kąta \(\alpha\;\) i długości przyprostokątnej \(a\;\) leżącej naprzeciw tego kąta.
Zależności te pokazują następujące wzory:
\(\sin \alpha = \frac{a}{c}\):
\(\cos \alpha = \frac{b}{c}\):
\(\operatorname{tg} \alpha = \frac{a}{b}\):
\(\operatorname{ctg} \alpha = \frac{b}{a}\).

Miara łukowa kąta
Miara łukowa kąta jest wyrażona przez stosunek długości łuku okręgu opartego na tym kącie do długości promienia okręgu
-
- \(\alpha =\frac{l}{r}\)
gdzie
- α – rozpatrywany kąt,
- l – długość łuku,
- r – promień okręgu, którego wycinkiem jest łuk.
Jednostką tak zapisanego kąta jest radian (1 rad).
